Best Online Fax Service in 2026 (From Someone Who Built One)

I needed to send one fax. I tried three services. Two were terrible. One failed entirely. So I built FaxDrop. Here is what I learned about the online fax market, and an honest breakdown of what is actually worth using.

What Most Online Fax Services Get Wrong

The fax market has not changed in twenty years. The major players, eFax, HelloFax (now Dropbox Fax), MyFax, all launched between 1999 and 2007. Their pricing pages look like they were built to confuse. Their UIs feel like a trip back to Internet Explorer 8.

The standard playbook is: hook you with a "free" offer, then bury the $17.99/month subscription in the fine print. You need to send one fax. You end up subscribed to something you will forget to cancel.

The demand is enormous. Tens of millions of people search for fax services every month. Healthcare, legal, government, real estate, insurance: fax is not going away. But the products serving that demand are a decade stale. That is the gap FaxDrop was built to fill.

The Main Options (And What They Are Actually Good For)

FaxDrop

Built in 2026 specifically because nothing else was good. Free tier: 2 faxes per month, no account required. Pay-per-fax: $1.99 per fax. Subscription plans for heavy users. HIPAA-compliant with a Sinch BAA. Documents deleted after delivery. Works from any browser on any device.

Best for: one-time senders who refuse to subscribe, healthcare and legal professionals who need HIPAA compliance, and developers building fax into applications.

eFax

The giant of online fax. PCMag recommended. Huge brand. But the entry price is $17.99/month and the interface still feels like 2008. No free tier that is actually useful. HIPAA compliance requires upgrading to a higher-priced tier. Fine if you send 150+ faxes per month and want the brand name. Overkill for everyone else.

FaxZero

Free, ad-supported, no account needed. The catch: ads appear on every fax you send, up to 5 per day. No HIPAA compliance. UI looks abandoned. Good option if you are sending personal faxes and do not mind ads on your documents. Not acceptable for healthcare or legal.

Dropbox Fax (HelloFax)

Wirecutter-recommended and genuinely decent. Free tier gives you 5 pages total lifetime, not per month. Now buried inside Dropbox. Pricing starts at $9.99/month. Good Dropbox integration if you already live in that ecosystem. Not ideal for one-time use.

Fax.Plus

Best content in the space. HIPAA compliance. Free tier gives you 10 pages per month. Pricing starts around $6.99/month. Swiss-based company, which some US users hesitate on. Solid option for small practices. Their fax API is the closest thing to a developer-friendly offering before FaxDrop.

Two free faxes a month. No subscription. Just upload, enter a number, and send.

How to Choose: What Actually Matters

How often do you fax?

One or two faxes per year: do not subscribe to anything. Use FaxDrop free tier or pay-per-fax credits. A subscription you forget to cancel will cost you more in one month than you would spend on pay-per-fax all year.

5 to 50 faxes per month: look at subscription plans. FaxDrop's Pro plan at $9.99/month covers 50 faxes. Fax.Plus starts around the same price. eFax is overkill at $17.99+ for this volume.

200+ faxes per month: you are a power user. FaxDrop Business at $24.99/month or an API integration makes more sense than paying per fax. At this volume, pick the service with the most reliable delivery and the best audit trail.

Do you need HIPAA compliance?

If you work in healthcare, the answer is yes, no exceptions. You need a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) from your fax provider. FaxDrop includes a Sinch BAA. eFax has a HIPAA tier, but it requires upgrading to a higher plan. FaxZero has no HIPAA compliance at all. See our full HIPAA compliant fax guide for the details.

Are you a developer?

Twilio deprecated their fax API in 2021. That left a gap. FaxDrop has an API with simple REST endpoints, pay-per-use pricing, and HIPAA compliance built in. See the FaxDrop developer page for details.

What a "Free" Fax Service Actually Costs

"Free" in online fax is almost always a trap. Here is what that word usually means:

  • Free trial that auto-converts to a paid subscription after 30 days
  • Free tier that requires a credit card upfront
  • Free pages per month that reset annually, not monthly
  • Free sending, but you pay for a dedicated fax number you did not need
  • Ad-supported free tier where ads appear on your sent faxes

The genuinely free options in 2026: FaxDrop free tier (2 faxes/month, no card), Fax.Plus free tier (10 pages/month with an account), FaxZero (5 faxes/day with ads on your faxes).

If you need to send one fax and never want to think about it again, FaxDrop is the cleanest path. No account. No subscription. Upload your document, enter the number, send.

The Quick Comparison

ServiceFree TierStarting PriceHIPAA
FaxDrop2 faxes/month, no card$1.99/faxYes, included
eFaxNone$17.99/monthPaid tier only
FaxZero5/day with ads$2.09/fax (no ads)No

Fax.Plus10 pages/month$6.99/monthYes

The Bottom Line

The best online fax service depends entirely on your situation. Here is the fast version:

  • One-time or occasional use: FaxDrop free tier. No card, no account, no commitment.
  • Healthcare or legal professionals: FaxDrop (Sinch BAA included) or Fax.Plus. Avoid FaxZero entirely.
  • Heavy business use (150+ faxes/month): FaxDrop Business plan, Fax.Plus, or eFax if brand trust matters most.
  • Developers and AI agents: FaxDrop API. Simple REST endpoint, HIPAA compliant, pay-per-use.

Whatever you choose: do not subscribe to something you will forget to cancel. The fax services that have survived twenty years of market stagnation have done so partly by collecting passive subscription revenue from people who forgot they signed up. Do not be that person.
